We drank vodka shots with two older vietnamese men, tried to communicate, but they couldn't really speak english. It would be extremely powerful data if there was an aggregate data set from a number of travelers documenting what they spend on the travel trail.

Re: The Cost of Full Time Travel

Thanks for the reference! I've spent the last two years officially tracking my expenses (prior to that I only tracked my deductible expenses), and I find it quite illuminating - even empowering - to track them.

The trick when you track your expenses is not to feel guilty every time you spend money (because you have to record it and sometimes that makes you feel like you shouldn't have spent the money)...but rather to spend as you wish (within reason!) and track your expenses without pre-judgement.

If you're overspending, the proof will be in the pudding when you analyze your expenses (which initially should be done regularly).

It's a good exercise to do, whether or not you're traveling!

Re: Traveling and Obscene (Fun?) Full service kind of ruins the cultural immersion in my book.

On a related note, here's an article I think you'd really like - http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01...

Re: Obtaining a Cambodia Tourist Visa Online

This would have been extremely helpful since trying to obtain through a tour company will cost you double.

Also keep in mind those going from Cambodia overland into Thailand you only receive a 15 day visa as oppose to 30 when you fly in. Just a bit of useful info that I wish I had when making the trip to Angkor last year!

Re: Adventurous Destinations for Travelers of All Age

I have found great adventure throughout our beautiful country. The hillside wild flowers and barns of Pennsylvania, the grand splendor of Miami with its pastel buildings and white sand.
I'm friends with Chelsea from way back in high school and I love to read you and Chelsea's blog. What you two are doing, traveling around the world, is an absolute dream of mine and it seems that it wouldnt have been a possibility for you without the access to couchsurfing. I've wanted to try this for a while since it gives you a free place to stay, but better yet it gives you access to local places and foods that you would have otherwise never had the oppporunity to see if you went the touristy route. My question to you, since you guys are so experienced, is how do you know if someone is safe to stay with. I would love to use other hosts and even become a host myself, but the one thing that scares me is how to know if where your staying and even if who you're inviting to stay at your house is a trust worthy person? Did you guys just hope for the best in everywhere you stayed or did you have system that you used to select the best places. Hope you guys are doing great and I would love to meet you and see Chelsea in the future!!

Wishing the best!!

They are way too big. A sleep sack like this one? Yes. I have one of those (though I didn't on my first few trips). before every trip, I seem to wander to REI and buy a few more sweet pieces of travel gear :)

Re: Rookie Backpacker Travel Fail

I have to disagree! If you have a sleeping bag then you don't have to pay to rent sheets! Maybe hostels didn't do that in 2005 but they sure do now. And on overnight busses and trains that totally (and always) misuse the air conditioning, its a real life saver.
